My love for the game started at the young age of 5 playing ball on the sandlot in Scottsville, VA.
It was there that I learned how the relationships built over struggles and triumphs develop into lifelong friendships. It was there that I learned how to fall and how to rise back up. It was there that I learned the value of a coach's positive impression. It was there that I learned that we wouldn’t always win but we would always learn. It was there that my passion for the game of baseball evolved into a passion to be a better person, on and off the field.
There are two individuals in particular that helped create the coach and person that I am today. Those two people picked me up, physically and metaphorically, when I needed them and persuaded me to begin my coaching career. The late, and great, Gene and Phyllis Johnson deserve recognition for being the dream and then the face of Scottsville Rec ball. They were the powerhouse behind the program and two of the best people that I have met in my life.
The transition from baseball to softball happened when I started helping coach my daughter in 2014. She was in t-ball and I loved stepping back onto the field from day one. I knew from that moment that this is where I would develop athletes. Young women that had that same drive, passion and determination that I did as a kid growing up in Scottsville. I knew that I had learned valuable life lessons on the dirt that I wanted to share with others. What good is a gift if you can’t share it with others?
Fast forward to 2016 and our Fluvanna All-Stars team is Runner-Up in the State Championship. The evidence was in their smiles. They had a heart and love for the game, just as I did, and it was time to share the gift of knowledge and opportunity that I had in front of me.
Then, in the fall of 2018, I started the first Organized Chaos travel softball team. We began as a 10u team and time has flown by as we’ve now grown into a reputable organization consisting of 4 teams with a multitude of players and coaches.
It was there, on the dirt, that I began my journey. My goal is to stay on the dirt and continue to help young women become the athletes and good humans that they strive to be - on and off the field - by following the footsteps of my mentors.
There will be struggles and triumphs, winning and losing, rising and falling, and that is what makes it “the greatest game in the world and it deserves the best you can give it”
